DAUT
(OR DAUDT) LINE
I recently received
a letter from Carlos Eugenio Daudt, of Brasil, whose great-great-grandfather,
Johannes Daudt (1787-1858), was the first of his family to arrive
in Brasil in 1825. Briefly his line goes like this:
Ioannis Dauth
married Susanna Margaretha Sauer.
Their children:
(1) Johannes Daut (1749)
(2) Maria Elisabetha Daut (1752)
(3) Phillypus (or Philyppus) Iacobus Daut (1754)
(4) Joes Adamus Daut (1763)
Phillypus Iacobus
Daut (1754) married Gertrudes Lang (1764-1791)
Their children:
(1) Johannes Daudt (1787-1858)
(2) Henrique (Heinrich) Daut, died in Amsterdam.
Johannes Doutt
(1787) married Barbara Schumacher (1793-1866)
Mr. Daudt says
that his ancestors came from Strassburg, in the Palatinate, (or
Mainz, according to others), in 1825, in a ship called the "Friedrich
Heinrich." They arrived in Rio de Janeiro and changed ships
(bergantin Carolina), and then the family (along with other Germans)
arrived in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (January 15, 1826) and
settled in the city of Sao Leopoldo, the first settlement of Germans
in Brasil.
Mr. Daudt says
that the family of Daudts, in Brasil, is quite large. They descend
from Dauts, as does the line of our John Doutt. There is no reason
to think we are related, but there is no reason to think we are
not, either. This is the first hint I have seen of where Dauts
came from in Europe. Until now, I have heard much speculation,
but no actual facts.
[Editor: This
is very interesting. I have enlarged and italized
Mr. Daudt's line in the above lineage.]
The above article
appeared in DOUTT DIALOGUES newsletter, November 2000 (Vol. X,
Issue 4, Page 11). Although Mr. Daudt's line settled in Brazil,
our John Doutt (Johannes Daut) could have descended from an ancestor.
Did we also come from Strassburg, in the Palatinate? Who knows?
But it is a possible clue.

What about Doudt?
I received a phone
call recently from a lady named Audrey Doudt. She descends from
Daniel Daut, and over the years the surname was changed to Doudt.
It is, of course, pronounced just like Doutt, but the spelling
is different.
The Daniel Daut
she mentioned is the one who is about the same age as our John
Doutt (Daut), and Daniel and his wife were sponsors for our John
Doutt's son, Daniel, who was born in 1803. It has been speculated
that Daniel and John might have been brothers or perhaps cousins.
According to Audrey,
Daniel's family goes like this:
Daniel Doudt (Daut),
born about 1780, married Maria Barbara ___?___, born about 1780.
Their children:
(1) Daniel Doudt
Jr, born 4 July 1804, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania
christened 5 August 1804, Egypt Reformed Church, Lehigh County,
Pennsylvania
married Elisabeth Fieltz
their children:
1. Samuel, b: 9 Mar 1828, d: 25 Jun 1872, never married
2. Henry, b: 21 Mar 1838, d: 1917
3. James
4. Elisabeth
5. Maria
6. Susan
7. Willoughby
(2) Elias Doudt,
b: 28 October 1806, Berks County, Pennsylvania
christened 23 November 1806, Union Reformed Church, Lehigh County,
Pennsylvania
d: 20 Aug 1847, Seneca, Ohio
married Mary Magdalena Peter
their children:
1. Levi, b: 19 September 1828, d: 16 Feb 1905
2. Charlotte Christina, b: 14 May 1830, d: 1833/1834
3. Edward, b: 10 July 1832, d: 14 Jan 1885
4. Mary, b: 1834/1835, d: 1909
(3) Judith, b:
23 April 1809, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania
married 15 April 1830, Peter Miller, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania
(4) Susanna, b:
6 July 1811, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania
According to another
researcher, Elias Doudt and Mary Magdalena Peter had another son,
Elias Doudt (1846-1919), who married Sarah Jane Bowerman (1853-1935).
This would seem to agree with the obituary of Levi Doudt.
Many thanks to
Audrey Doudt for the information about Daniel Daut (Doudt's) line.
