I enjoyed reading the following, and I thought you might enjoy it too. [From the Editor]

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay "them."

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5 . Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. When the tears happen: Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10.Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

*this age is completely wrong, if this is Eleanor/Ellen (wife of Daniel), and her son Reuben. I read the ages as 89 for Eleanor, which would be about right, but Reuben's age is clearly 48. Reuben's age should be about 65. It is possible that the information was given by a neighbor who did not know their ages, of course.

Another Doutt Branch

Debbie Oden sent the following information about her father-in-law. Apparently he has tried to connect to his roots for many years, and she is trying to help him. According to her, he was sent to a foster home immediately after his birth, and was never adopted. He would love to have a sense of the family he never had.

Harry Robert Zanotti was born 8 June 1927, an illegitimate child. His father is listed as Dominick Zanotti, and his mother is a Doutt. He grew up in foster homes, where his name was changed to Paul Eugene Odin. Later his surname was read as Oden, and that became his name.

Paul Eugene Oden married Dorothy Gorleski, and they had nine children, plus they raised a grandson as well. Their children are:

  1. Barbara Ann Oden
  2. Shannon Paul Oden
  3. Irene Carol Oden
  4. Carol Lee Oden
  5. Paul Eugene Oden Jr.
  6. Wayne Alan Oden
  7. Polly Ann Oden
  8. Kitty Lou Oden
  9. Randy Scott Oden
    and the grandchild:

Various Clippings from Louis Doutt

Louis Doutt sent me several items that he found on the Internet, that connect to Doutts. They are varied, and are as follows.

Mrs. Margaret T. (Peddicord) Rowe, daughter of Clark and Jerusha (Allison) Peddicord, died at Vandergrift, Sunday evening, May 12. She was born in Armstrong township, November 4, 1906. She attended the Peelor School and Indiana High School three years, and was employed by Troutman's store before her marriage. She was a member of Curry's Run Presbyterian church. She was united in marriage to L. Grant Rowe of Parkwood February 23, 1928. Possessed of a charming personality, a friendly and ready smile for everyone, Mrs. Rowe enjoyed a host of friends, to whom her death is a sad event. Throughout her illness which extended over a number of years, Mrs. Rowe maintained a patient fortitude rarely found in one of her age. Visitors, and there were many, to her bedside, always came away feeling strengthened to carry on, by the calm and reverent way in which Mrs. Rowe submitted to the inevitable. Almost to the minute when death eased her suffering, Mrs. Rowe talked quietly to a group of relatives and friends and then silently and painlessly passed on where realms of peace await the blessed.

Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Peddicord; her husband, L. Grant Rowe, and three sisters; Mrs. Zella Wise of Vandergrift; Mrs. Laura Wiggins, Armstrong township, Anthony Run District; and Mary Peddicord, at home. One son preceded her in death several years ago.

Funeral services will be conducted in the home of M. Doutt, 508 Longfellow street, Vandergrift, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, the Rev. Clyde Barns officiating. Immediately after the service the body will be removed to the Peddicord home, Indiana, R. D. 6, where Rev. Barns will conduct another service at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in Oakland cemetery, Inciana.

From the Indiana (Pa) Evening Gazette, May 13, 1935, pages 1 and 2

How does she fit in to the Doutt genealogy?

Editor: I'm not sure how this record connects, but I think only loosely. The funeral has held at the home of M. Doutt on 508 Longfellow Street, Vandergrift, PA. This is the home of Elmer Melvin Doutt and Doris Beck Doutt. The Rowe family lived at 508 1/2 Longfellow St., in the 1930 census, so perhaps they lived in a duplex. So I would say they were probably friends, or at least good neighbors.

Beetles Put to Work Scouring Up Old Bones, by the United Press

PITTSBURGH — There's a "bug house" in a converted election booth near Carnegie Museum where beetles are busy cleaning bones for the museum. They call the place a dermestorium.

The dermestorium is operated by J. Kenneth Doutt, curator of mammalogy, a branch of zoology.

Doutt explained that skulls and skeletons need thorough cleaning before being filed in dust-proof drawers or exhibited to the public.

The beetles do all the work But it takes anywhere from a week to two years for the beetles to finish the job.

Doutt said sometimes the beetles refuse to work.

"They seem to have a secret code whereby nobody does anything for weeks, sometimes months at a time"

Truck Kills 2, Injures 3 in Hardin.

A Carey man, Bernie Manns, 26, was the driver of the truck. He was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol.

DAVIS, Calif. (UPI) — Two University of California scientists urge caution in efforts to control insect and animal pests. Dr. Wendell W. Kilgore and Dr. Richard L. Doutt say any change in the environment of pesticides can lead to unforeseen and severe effects, often worse than before control was attempted.

Kilgore is with the Agricultural Toxicology and Residue Research Laboratory on the UC-Davis campus and Doutt is connected with the Division of Biological Control at UC-Berkeley. Their work, Pest Control is part of the Pest Control, Biological, Physical Selected Chemical Methods series.

Grandma Complains

FRANKLIN, Pa — (UP) — Too many baby-sitters cause many modern marriages to fail said Mrs. A. J. Doutt, looking back on 70 years of married life.

"I think the young people today have too many social activities," said the great-grandmother who doesn't look her 88 years.

"They ought to start the home right by staying home and raising a family," said Mrs. Doutt. "There's not much love there when they keep going out all the time and have to hire baby-sitters to mind their children."

Mrs. Doutt disagrees that young people today are "wiser and weaker." She thinks they are "weaker and foolisher" but she loves them just the same. They call her regularly and she enjoys talking to them.

This article was picked up by the United Press and carried in a great many papers on that day.

The new officer will be branched to a specific corps in the Army to serve on active duty or in the National Guard or Reserve. The lieutenant also will attend the officer basic course relating to his or her particular military occupational specialty/job.

Heidi Doutt, DO - Co-Chief

Areas of special interest: Obstetrics and Women's Health.

Background: Born and raised in rural north western PA. I graduated from Allegheny College in 1992, P.C.O.M. in 1996 and did my internship and 1st year general surgery residency at Swourban General Hospital. My favorite activities are running, cross-stitching and just relaxing with my cats.

Philosophy on Health Care: I believe family medicine is a very special area to practice in because you get to be involved in the dynamics and decisions of a family or individual that the specialists never have the opportunity to investigate. I feel the Guthrie Residency Program allows you to develop your own sense of providing healthcare while at the same time provides the guidance you need.
