Dear Friends,
Surprise! Here is another issue, well actually a double issue, of DOUTT DIALOGUES. It has been fun to put together, and I am glad to finally get it into the mail to you.
For the record, this has been a very cold and snowy Winter. You folks on the East coast have gotten a lot more snow than we have here in the Mid West. Actually, I get along pretty well with it, because I don't have to leave the house unless I want to. My car sits in the garage until the streets clear a bit.
Last Fall, my son-in-law developed an allergy to their guinea pigs, and I inherited them. They really are cute little "eating machines", and always begging for more. I enjoy them a lot, and my cats seem to think they are their pets, as well. They are rather protective of them, and one morning when I forgot to feed them, Snow White (one of my cats) pestered me until the guinea pigs were fed. I cover the guinea pigs' cage at night, and Snow White often sleeps under it.
Take care, and enjoy the Spring weather when it finally comes.

William and Nancy McFarland are buried at the Rural Valley Cemetery in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Thanks to Mykal Duffy, I can share these photographs of their tombstones. William's tombstone is fairly legible, but Nancy's is not. Unfortunately Nancy is the one of whom I know little. She was apparently alive on 12 Jan 1858, when William's will was dated, because he mentions her in the will. However, she is not in the 1860 census.
William McFarland and Nancy Stewart are the parents of Elizabeth McFarland, wife of Absalom Solomon Doutt Sr. They resided in Armstrong County, and had at least eight children, perhaps more. William died 26 October 1866.

Ever wonder what Santa Claus does at his North Pole home when he returns Christmas morning after delivering toys and presents to all the good little boys and girls?
You might find jolly old St. Nick standing shoeless, warming his backside to a black, pot-bellied stove. On one foot is a red and white striped stocking. Its mate hangs from the stove damper. A calendar on the wall denotes its Dec. 25.
This scene is depicted on one of the seasonal wallhangings Donna Scranton has framed in a hoop and will be shown Feb 15 and 16 at the 20th annual Calico Cut-Ups Quilt Show at the Salvation Army Independence Corps Center, 14700 E. Truman Road. Hours are 10 am to 4 pm both days. Admission is free.
Donna and her lifelong friend, Mary Ellen Bloomquist, are sharing the spotlight as co-featured quilters at the 2008 show. Featured are some 100 quilts, wallhangings, quilted clothing, quilting-related vendors and various ongoing demonstrations.

That's not all. Visitors will have the opportunity to win a blue and white Opportunity quilt, composed of 20 stars representing 20 different states. Tickets for the drawing are $1 each or six for $5.
Guests will not want to miss the Mystery quilts or Charity quilts displays, says Phyllis Nelson. Phyllis and Carolyn Morrison are co-presidents of the 50-member club that meets on Wednesdays at the Towers Apartments, US 24 and Jennings Road, Independence.
The Mystery quilt gets its name, Phyllis says, because participating quilters don't know what they are making until the quilt is finished. Each month, members receive a different pattern.
With all these quilts hanging together, Phyllis says visitors "will be able to see how different they all look using the same patterns.'
The Calico Cut-Ups also have been making Charity quilts for this year's show and all of them Page 12

As for the log cabin quilt, collecting material for it took longer than making it.
Mary Ellen recalls that on her annual visit to Leavenworth, Wash., she would stop at numerous fabric stores along the way to purchase different hues of blues and yellows to go in the quilt.
"It took me a couple of trips to get all the fabric I needed for the quilt."
Donna, on the other hand, knows exactly what she is going to show in her six spaces. Items include a 104-by-104-inch quilt, 12 seasonal wallhangings, a quilted jacket and a small paper-pieced wallhanging.
As a 4-year-old, Donna learned to sew by sitting next to her mother at an old treadle in her Independence home on Noland Road.
"I have always had a love for handworks," she says. "I like to cross-stitch. I like to embroidery. You name it!"
Her infatuation with sewing and quilting resulted in a 26-year career as an adult education instructor in Independence.
She began teaching in 1975, and taught until she suffered cardiac arrest in April 2001. Among her students was Mary Ellen, one of nine children, who learned her sewing and quilting skills from her mother at an early age.
"I would sit down and sew one block after another. Then (mother) would take them and put them together for me."
Donna extends a personal invitation to all her former students to attend the show.
"I would like to see the women I have made friendships with....and those I have lost contact with. I would love to have them come out and I would like to see them." Page 13

will be on display. The labor-of-love quilts will be donated to area charities.
Every year, the Calico Cut-Ups select a member as its featured quilter. This year, though, the club selected co-featured quilters for the first time.
Why two honorees? Phyllis explains it this way:
"Donna has done so much for the quilting community and Mary Ellen has contributed so much to our group that we couldn't choose between them. We thought they were both deserving the honor."
Donna and Mary Ellen are both elated about their selections.
"It's quite an honor," says Donna, who was asked to made a quilt for the Japanese sister city in the 1980s.
After cutting all the blocks, Donna says 20 women worked on piecing and quilting each block. Then she and another woman put the quilt together so the Independence Sister City delegation could take it to Japan.
Mary Ellen says she considers it a great honor for an 82-year-old to be selected to show off her quilting skills.
"Now," she says, "its her time to be a star."
Although she crochets and does embroidery, Mary Ellen prefers applique to anything else.
"That's my favorite."
With the exception of two king-size quilts, Mary Ellen isn't sure what she will use to fill up her six allotted spaces at the show.
Her two for-sure entries are a Civil War-pattern quilt and a long cabin-pattern quilt that she finished last year. The Civil war quilt took longer to make, she says, because the borders are handstitched. The rest is machine-quilted.

Campbell could not provide an exact salary for the new chief Tuesday evening but said it will be in the $50,000 to $60,000 range. Doutt will receive a $5,000 raise from his former base salary, which does not include overtime pay.
Campbell said he also chose Doutt because he's relatively young and not as close as some other city officers to retirement age. Campbell said he'd like the chief to be in place for a while to maintain continuity in the department.
"It was a difficult choice," Campbell said. "We have a great police force."
"I agree with the mayor -- he has one of the best departments anywhere," Joe Doutt said. "We have a bunch of good men and women."
Joe Doutt, who lives in Lower Burrell, said he will miss the close contact with residents and Arnold's officers.
After 26 years as a police officer, he said he plans to relax --- when he's not helping his wife, Georgeann, or daughter Sara.
"I have a lot of to-do lists -- a daddy-do list along with my honey-do list," he joked.
"I have no immediate plans," Joe Doutt said of his retirement. "I might even buy a fishing license and use it this year."
Doutt said he is not applying for the director of security position that recently created at New Kensington-Arnold School District.
"I never even thought about it. I never inquired about it. I never had the intention," he said.
Eric Doutt, a school board member, confirmed his uncle has not applied for the job.
Two hats
Eric Doutt said he does not believe his dual roles as school board member and police chief will come into conflict.
Chuck Korman, a former school board member who also retired as New Kensington police chief this summer, withdrew from a school board race in 2003 when he learned he was violating the federal Hatch Act. The act does not allow government employees who handle federal money to serve as elected officials.
Doutt said the city and school district attorneys are researching his situation, but since he won't administer any federal loans or grants as police chief, he believes he's in the clear.
If the attorneys determine there is a conflict, Doutt said he would resign his school board seat.
Doutt lives in Arnold with his wife, Karen, and three children. He is the son of City Clerk Oscar Doutt. Page 15

They had sustained winds and rain for about 10-12 hours. Within an hour of the hurricane reaching Harlingen (their town), the weather gauges at the airport were blown away. The last reading had gusts to 80 miles per hour.

It wouldn't be funny if it weren't so true.... Julie Andrews turned 69 and to commemorate her 69th birthday on October 1, actress/vocalist Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan `s Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP. One of the musical numbers she performed was "My Favourite Things" from the legendary movie "The Sound Of Music."
Here are the actual lyrics she used:
Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting, Cadillac's and cataracts, and hearing aids and glasses, When the pipes leak, Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions, Back pains, confused brains, and no need for sinnin', When the joints ache, When the eyes grow dim,
Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over four minutes and repeated encores. Please share Ms.. Andrews' clever wit and humour with others who would appreciate it.

I recently received an e-mail from Kenneth Neil Tiffin. He had run across my Doutt website, and thought he would set the record straight. He was born Kenneth Neil Doutt on 15 Mar 1955, the son of Donald Edwin Doutt and Anita Louise Bain. His parents separated, and on 5 Dec 1972, he and his brother Michael Alan had their last names changed to Tiffin.
I asked what he would like from me, and he said, nothing. He just wanted the information recorded somewhere. That is so important, because unless someone records it, this is the kind of illusive information that causes huge roadblocks.
For the record, the above branch is from Independence, Missouri, and Kenneth Neil Tiffin is my first cousin, once removed.

Greg Smith and his lovely bride Kathryn Falla were married 10 July 2009 in Bristol, England.
Kathryn is the daughter of David and Jane Falla of Guernsey, England, and Greg is the son of Dean E. Smith and Sandra Wilmsmeier of Rolla, Missouri.
The couple is making their home in Bristol, England.
There was a bit of a comedy of errors, when the couple's post wedding plans fell through. They planned to fly to the United States to meet Greg's family, but discovered that Greg's Visa had not come through. Finally, they decided that Kathryn should come as planned, and Greg would come when the Visa came through. Kathryn came on Wednesday, and Greg finally was able to join her on Sunday. Not the ideal honeymoon, but it did work out.
