Dear Friends,
I ran across the following article on the Internet, and thought you might enjoy it. In these days of skyrocketing prices, it is especially interesting. The prices would be nice, but we would be giving up so much if we could go back 100 years.
It is food for thought, at any rate.

I know that you like pictures of the Doutt family, and I think you will like what I did with one I am sending you. I am sending the original polaroid version, and the touched up one that I did. It was my Dad's garage that he used from 1960-1980 when he passed away. It took a number of years to get it to look like the photo. It was built in three sections. The first is the one with the sliding doors, then the middle, and lastly the large two story section. As he did more and more work, he needed more and more room. In the early 1960's, I was working in an auto parts store in Waynesburg, where I now live, and when he and my mother would come down to visit he would drive an old early 1940's Ford pickup, and take home a load of parts for the garage. I would do the same when we went up to visit him. That is why the back end of the garage was so big, he wanted to open a small parts store, but never got around to finishing the project. | ||||||||

Theresa Bishop is looking for information about her father, who passed away in 1978, when she was only two years old. The information she has is scant. Her father's name was John Joseph Doutt. She says that she knows he was married about 4 times previously, but the only children he had were her brother and herself, with her mother, Cheri Miller. He lived in Titusville and Erie PA, from the late 60's until he passed away. She says that he was a professional wrestler, and his stage name was Tiny. Tiny was also his nickname within the family. . In my records, I have a John Joseph Doutt, son of William Ellis Doutt and Alice Winlow. This seems to be the correct person. William and Alice had only the one children. William Ellis Doutt was the son of Calvin Doutt and Elizabeth Ellis. They had twelve children, but six died young. Calvin was a stone mason and a Chief of Police. His son, William Ellis Doutt was a trustee for the volunteer fire department. I searched on the Internet, for Doutt and wrestling, and came up with a "Railroad Doutt" who was wrestling in about 1938. I have printed part of the articles here. Since John Joseph Doutt was born in 1927 (or 1928, according to your source), it seems that Railroad Doutt could not have been Tiny Doutt. However, Theresa Bishop wrote that her father was extremely tall. He was 7'4" tall and wore a size 13 shoe. Then I got to thinking that he could have been a mighty big boy at age 10 or 11, and they might have been passing him off as an adult. This is one of the most interesting queries that I have had in awhile. I am printing parts of the wrestling articles here. If anyone has any ideas, please pass them along. I know some of you are very good at searching on the Internet, so perhaps you can find information that I did not. |
Weidner Signed to Meet Texan

Matchmaker George McCloud succeeded in matching this pair yesterday. The event will be decided by the best two in two falls with a 90-minute time limit. "Silver Streak" Davis, rugged cowboy from Texas, has been pitted against Joe Wolf, the capable Lancaster Boy in the semi-final, with "Railroad" Doutt, a newcomer from Louisville, meeting Joe Magyar, Hungarian star, in the curtain raiser. With 55 years of living under his belt, Master Gunnery Sgt. Steve Doutt has a wise observation or two
By Kelly O'Sullivan Spirit Editor
When Master Gunnery Sgt. Steve Doutt joined the Marine Corps in 1979, he had no intention of going to 30. But his recruiter, a man Doutt knew only as Gunny Green unwittingly threw down a challenge as he discussed retirement benefits with the new recruit. He said, `I have to tell you about these, but you're never going to make it that far,'" Doutt recalls. That statement seems harsh until you realize the man Gunny Green was talking to 28 years ago was 27, married and a father of one. Now 55, Doutt is at the age cap for enlisted Marines, but he's not going anywhere; Headquarters Marine Corps granted a waiver allowing him to stay in for two more years. The base logistics chief has cut the cake six times during Marine Corps birthday ceremonies, which see both the oldest and the youngest Marines coming forward for the honor. The Corps celebrates its 232nd birthday on Nov. 10. "I feel honored and privileged," Doutt says of representing the sunset side of service. "It's not about me. I'm filling a role ... ceremony is important; keeping tradition alive is vital to the Corps."
Important lessons
Throughout his career, Doutt has served in a variety of capacities, legal clerk, drill instructor and supply chief at commands ranging from the staff NCO Academy in Quantico, VA, to Cherry Point, N.C., and Iwakuni, Japan. Doutt says candidly that he wasn't always thrilled with the jobs he filled but they ultimately were the right ones. "One of the things I learned by accepting orders, I didn't always get which I wanted, but I got what I needed," he says. "If I had resisted any orders, I wouldn't be where I am now." Where he is now is at the heart of the base's Logistics Division, which oversees food services, transportation, ammunition, purchasing and contracting, and material support for MCAGCC. He's too polite to say it, but if Doutt and his fellow logistics Marines didn't do their jobs, life on base would be pretty miserable. Marines and sailors wouldn't eat, they wouldn't get to where they need to go, they couldn't load their weapons and active-duty and civilian workers would find themselves without the supplies they need to carry out the Combat Center's mission. It's something Doutt calls "the value of the assist ... My role as a Marine has been in providing support --- in providing the assist. I've learned to take pride in that."

Life beyond the Corps
Doutt also takes pride in his life outside the Corps. He's a proud father of four: Billy, 29, Christopher, 24; Michael, 23; and Helen, 19. A year-and-a-half after losing his wife, Cynthia, to cancer, Doutt met Kris Mitchell, a retired gunnery sergeant who works at the base exchange, at St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church in Twentynine Palms, where both are members. They fell in love and eventually married. "She's beautiful," he says of Kris. "We're so well-matched." The church remains a big part of their lives. As junior warden Doutt represents the views of parishioners in planning the church's future. He also leads the music ministry and is a licensed lay minister who occasionally leads services. Father Jan Hanley, pastor at St. Martin, has nothing but praise for Doutt. "He's a lovely guy, isn't he? A lovely, caring man," Hanley says. "He's got a voice that you would listen to, not only in the military context but also in the church context. When he says something, it's worth listening to."
